A teen in Louisiana accidentally fired a bullet that went through the family dog and killed his grandmother, authorities say.
Blaise Horton, 19, was removing the magazine from the gun Thursday when he fatally shot Cathy Fulton, according to Plaquemine Police Chief Kenny Payne. Horton believed the weapon was empty.
Fulton, who was 67, according to WBRZ, died at the scene.
Payne told local news outlets that the shooting appears to be accidental, but Horton was being booked in jail on a negligent homicide charge.
The dog was sitting next to Fulton when the shot was accidentally fired. It is being treated at an emergency veterinarian clinic and is undergoing surgery, according to WBRZ.
The tragic shooting took place just after 4 p.m. on Thursday in Plaquemine, a city of 7,000.
